Glioblastoma in a 20-year-old female patient after Chikungunya infection

We describe the case of a 20-year-old female patient who died 4 months after the diagnosis of a glioblastoma (GBM). The tumor emerged nearly a month after a Chikungunya (CHIKV) infection and displayed positivity to Citomegalovirus (CMV) DNA. The immunohistochemical studies revealed GFAP positivity in rare cells, IDH-1 positive, vimentin positive, ATRX positive, Ki-67 positive in 35% of neoplast.. Read More»

APOA5 polymorphisms associated with lipid metabolism in Brazilian children and adolescents

    E. De França, D.S.B.S. Silva, T.F.C. Silva, C.L. Dornelles, J.G. Alves and C.S. Alho

Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the APOA5 gene have been studied for their association with metabolic syndrome. Thus, elucidating the effect of the mechanism involved in APOA5 gene polymorphisms on lipid metabolism is of great importance. In this study we aimed to determine the allelic and genotypic frequencies of -1131T>C, Ser19Trp, and intergenic APOA4/A5 and to evaluate the association.. Read More»

Lack of association between glutathione S-transferase polymorphisms and primary glioma in a case-control study in Rio de Janeiro

    P. Coutinho, V. Sandim, J.A. Oliveira, G. Alves and A. Hatagima

The glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), a family of phase II isozymes, detoxify several carcinogens. Genetic variations in GSTs have been associated with increased risk for cancer due to a heritable deficiency in detoxification pathways for environmental carcinogens. Conflicting findings have been reported about the association between constitutive GST polymorphisms .. Read More»
