Construction of a primary DNA fingerprint database for cotton cultivars

Authors: Y.C. Zhang, M. Kuang, W.H. Yang, H.X. Xu, D.Y. Zhou, Y.Q. Wang, X.A. Feng, C. Su and F. Wang

Forty core primers were used to construct a DNA fingerprint database of 132 cotton species based on multiplex fluorescence detection technology. A high first successful ratio of 99.04% was demonstrated with tetraplex polymerase chain reaction. Forty primer pairs amplified a total of 262 genotypes among 132 species, with an average of 6.55 per primer and v.. Read More»

Population genetic structure of critically endangered salamander (Hynobius amjiensis) in China: recommendations for conservation

Authors: J. Yang, C.S. Chen, S.H. Chen, P. Ding, Z.Y. Fan, Y.W. Lu, L.P. Yu and H.D. Lin

Amji’s salamander (Hynobius amjiensis) is a critically endangered species (IUCN Red List), which is endemic to mainland China. In the present study, five haplotypes were genotyped for the mtDNA cyt b gene in 45 specimens from three populations. Relatively low levels of haplotype diversity (h = 0.524) and nucleotide diver.. Assessment of genotoxicity of waterpipe smoking using 8-OHdG biomarker

Authors: M. Azab, O.F. Khabour, K.H. Alzoubi, S.A.H. Mahmoud, M. Anabtawi and M. Quttina

Waterpipe tobacco smoking is increasing in popularity, particularly among young adults. This popularity is related to the lack knowledge regarding the health effects of waterpipe smoking. In this study, we examined the genotoxicity of waterpipe smoking using an 8-hydroxy deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) assay. Genotoxicity was evaluated in the saliva, urine, and s.. Read More»

Incidence of fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene (FGFR3) A248C, S249C, G372C, and T375C mutations in bladder cancer

Authors: Y. Dodurga, C. Tataroglu, Z. Kesen and N.L. Satiroglu-Tufan

Bladder cancer is the most frequent cancer of the urinary system. Fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFR) belong to the tyrosine kinase family and have important roles in cell differentiation and proliferation and embryogenesis. FGFR3 is located on chromosome 4p16.3, and missense mutations of FGFR3 are associated with autoso.. Read More»

cDNA, genomic sequence cloning and overexpression of the ribosomal protein S13 gene in the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)

Authors: Y. Song, Y.-L. Hou, W.-R. Hou, G.-F. Wu and T. Zhang

The cDNA and the genomic sequence of ribosomal protein S13 (RPS13) of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) was cloned using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and touchdown-PCR, respectively. These two sequences were sequenced and analyzed, and the cDNA of the RPS13 gene was overexpressed in Escherich.. Read More»

Multi-modulus algorithm based on global artificial fish swarm intelligent optimization of DNA encoding sequences

Authors: Y.C. Guo, H. Wang, H.P. Wu and M.Q. Zhang

Aimed to address the defects of the large mean square error (MSE), and the slow convergence speed in equalizing the multi-modulus signals of the constant modulus algorithm (CMA), a multi-modulus algorithm (MMA) based on global artificial fish swarm (GAFS) intelligent optimization of DNA encoding sequences (GAFS-DNA-MMA) was proposed. To improve the conver.. Read More»

Overexpression of an endo-1,4-²-glucanase V gene (EGV) from Trichoderma reesei leads to the accumulation of cellulase activity in transgenic rice

Authors: X.Y. Li, F. Liu, Y.F. Hu, M. Xia, B.J. Cheng, S.W. Zhu and Q. Ma

The ectopic expression of cellulase in biomass can reduce the cost of biofuel conversion. This trait modification technique is highly beneficial for biofuel production. In this study, we isolated an endo-1,4-beta-glucanase gene (EGV) from Trichoderma reesei and inserted this gene downstream of a fragment encoding the signal peptide Apo-SP in a modified pC.. Estimation of genetic distance based on RAPDs between 11 cotton accessions varying in heat tolerance

Authors: A.I. Khan, I.A. Khan, F.S. Awan, H.A. Sadaqat and S. Bahadur

The genetic distance of 11 cotton genotypes varying in heat tolerance was studied using RAPD markers. Fifty-three random decamer primers were used for the estimation of genetic distance. Among the 53 RAPD primers, which were custom synthesized by GeneLink Inc., UK, 32 were polymorphic and 21 were monomorphic. The 32 polymorphi.. Read More»

Mitochondrial tRNALeu(CUN) A12307G variant may not be associated pancreatic cancer

Authors: Y. Li, A.W. Huang, Y.Z. Chen, W.J. Yang, M.T. Zhou and H.W. Sun

Mitochondrial DNA mutations that lead to mitochondrial dysfunction have long been proposed to play important roles in the development of pancreatic cancer. Of these, alterations to mitochondrial tRNA genes constitute the largest group. Most recently, a variation at position 12307 in the gene encoding tRNALeu(CUN) has been repo.. Read More»

Biological characterization of liver fatty acid binding gene from miniature pig liver cDNA library

Authors: Y.H. Gao, K.F. Wang, S. Zhang, Y.N. Fan, W.J. Guan and Y.H. Ma

Liver fatty acid binding proteins (L-FABP) are a family of small, highly conserved, cytoplasmic proteins that bind to long-chain fatty acids and other hydrophobic ligands. In this study, a full-length enriched cDNA library was successfully constructed from Wuzhishan miniature pig, and then the L-FABP gene was cloned from this cDNA library and an expressio.. Read More»
