Cloning, sequencing, and polymorphisms of the Wistar-Imamichi rat growth hormone gene using PCR-SSCP

Authors: M.Q. Liu1, J.G. Wang2* and X.L. Li2*

We successfully cloned the Wistar-Imamichi (WI) rat growth hormone gene (GenBank accession: GQ890681), which contained 5 exons and 4 introns. Using the polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) technique, a novel missense substitution single nucleotide polymorphism was identified and tested for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.. Correlation of growth-related traits and their effects on body weight of the mud crab (Scylla paramamosain)

Authors: H.Y. Ma, C.Y. Ma, L.B. Ma, Z. Xu, N.N. Feng and Z.G. Qiao

In this study, we analyzed the correlation of 20 growth-related traits and their effects on body weight of Scylla paramamosain. The correlation coefficients in all trait pairs were significantly high, ranging from 0.551 to 0.999. Among 19 X-Y pairs, the correlation coefficient between traits X1 and Y was the highest, whereas that between X13 and Y was the.. Read More»

Association of novel single-nucleotide polymorphisms of the vascular endothelial growth factor-A gene with high-altitude adaptation in yak (Bos grunniens)

Authors: X.Y. Wu1,2, C.N. Liang1,2, X.Z. Ding1,2, X. Guo1,2, P.J. Bao1,2, M. Chu1,2, W.B. Liu1,2 and P. Yan1,2

Vascular endothelial growth factor-A gene (VEGF-A) is a key regulator of angiogenesis and an endothelial cell mitogen that plays an important role in high-altitude adaptation. In this study, we detected 2 novel single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of VEGF-A by screening for genetic variation in 700 individuals of 3 domestic Chinese yak breeds - namely G.. Read More»

Tumor-associated fibroblast-conditioned medium promotes tumor cell proliferation and angiogenesis

Authors: L.N. Xu, B.N. Xu, J. Cai, J.B. Yang, N. Lin

This study aimed to explore how tumor-associated fibroblasts (TAFs) promote the proliferation and angiogenesis of tumor cells via the paracrine mechanism in vitro. Conditioned media (CM) of ovarian TAFs and normal fibroblasts (NFs) were collected. Ovarian cancer cells (OCCs) were treated with 2 mL TAFs-CM and NFs-CM in experim.. Read More»

Proline partially overcomes excess molybdenum toxicity in cabbage seedlings grown in vitro

Authors: J. Kumchai1, J.-Z. Huang2, C.-Y. Lee2, F.-C. Chen2 and S.-W. Chin2

In vitro grown cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) seedlings exposed to excess molybdenum (Mo) ions exhibited severely reduced plant growth at the cotyledonary stage. Adding 80 mM proline (Pro) to the Mo-treated medium could help 50% seedlings to overcome the toxicity and grow true leaves. Under excess Mo stress, seedlings accumulated blue/purple an.. Read More»

Expression profile of insulin-like growth factor system genes in muscle tissues during the postnatal development growth stage in ducks

Authors: C.-L. Song, H.-H. Liu, J. Kou, L. Lv, L. Li, W.-X. Wang and J.-W. Wang

Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) are regulators that modulate the proliferation and differentiation of muscle tissues. We quantified the messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of IGF-I, IGF-II, and type I and II IGF receptors (IGF-IR and IGF-IIR) in muscle tissues including the breast, leg, and myocardium during an early postnatal development growth stage (pos.. Insulin-like growth factor I gene polymorphism associated with growth and carcass traits in Thai synthetic chickens

Authors: N. Promwatee, B. Laopaiboon, T. Vongpralub, Y. Phasuk,S. Kunhareang, W. Boonkum and M. Duangjinda

Four Thai synthetic chicken lines (Kaen Thong, Khai Mook Esarn, Soi Nin, and Soi Pet) originated from Thai native and exotic commercial chickens were evaluated for their growth and carcass traits with the purpose of developing a Thai broiler breeding program. Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) gene is known to play an important role in growth, prolifera.. Read More»

Association of transforming growth factor-beta 1 gene polymorphism with genetic susceptibility to ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament in Korean patients

Authors: I.B. Han, A.E. Ropper, Y.J. Jeon, H.S. Park, D.A. Shin, Y.D. Teng, S.-U. Kuh and N.-K. Kim

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligaments (OPLL) has been considered to be associated with abnormalities of bone metabolism, and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) has been demonstrated to affect the bone remodeling process. We investigated two SNPs of the TGF-β1 promoter (-509C>T; rs1800469) and exon 1 (869T>C; rs19820.. Read More»

Construction and functional study of pGN, a mammary gland-specific expression plasmid

Authors: J. Lin, Q.H. Yu, Q. Zhang and Q. Yang

The aim of this study was to construct a mammary gland-specific expression vector, pGN, and to validate its function in expressing growth hormone (GH) both in vitro and in vivo. First, the GH gene was amplified and inserted downstream of the b-casein 5'-arm. Next, the neo gene was cloned downstream of the b-casein 3'-arm as a .. Read More»
